This site has been created entirely for my own personal use, and to share with other people that are interested in learning other languages. In an effort to improve what I've developed so far I'd like to ask for people's input and suggestions. Please tell me what you think of the website and what I can do to make it better.

If you like my webpage, the best thing you could do is to post a recommendation on another site or forum, or email your friends with a link to travelersdictionary.net. Thanks!

If I'm going from English to Spanish and I already know how to pronounce the English word why do these cards just show me the English pronunciation? Am I doing it backwards? Should I be going from Spanish to English? or is it just this way? Also, on your widget do you include phrases? I mean common phrases? I can learn words but if I don't know the common connectors inbetween the words - how can I hope to speak in that other tongue?

How do I get to the alternate flashcard game without having trouble loading?

Name: vereen
how do I turn on sound, can't find anything. It also loads slow. Great job. Thanks

It would be so nice if verbs were conjugated in German.

I would be happy to help you out if I can. The site is free and I make no profit on it, so i do not have any special resources for adding more languages. I depend heavily on the users to help add content (words). There is only one requirement for starting a new language on travelersdictionary.net . If you can send a good list of at least 300 words, I will happily add the new language for you. After the language is set up, you can easily add as many words as you wish, using the "dictionary" > "add your own set of words" function. You can add as many words at one time as you want, as many times as you want. Please send me an email with the basic information of the language and a starter list that I can use to get people started practicing with.

if you click on the flash image of the sound note, it will play the sound. Anywhere else on the flash card and it automatically flips the card. Also, try click "display options" on the left-hand side and select "only words with Portuguese sounds" if you just want to practice listening to the words

Hey thanks for the great site! I'm also an American and I'm advanced in Spanish and I'd like to takle Portuguese. I was going through the flashcards but I haven't found a way to get the "Play Sound" link to work. When I click on it, the flashcard changes. Is this just not up and running yet? Congratulations on a helpful site.

HOLLA Zack! I feel retarded but I do not know how to add in a phrase for you. I guess I am unable to become a "master user"! This website is very cool and I will work on it everyday.

Hi I think your widget is a brilliant tool to help me learn Spanish whilst spending countless hours working (?) on my PC. Only one suggestion that would make it perfect - the ability to add your own list of translations or perhaps preset translations broken down into difficulty level. Having "ambassador" and "Arkansas" followed by "dog" and "I" seems to mix the unusual/obscure with the basics. I live in Spain so am working out translations daily - if you need someone to create some lists just ask - happy to help Phil

I would like to create flashcards for students of the Potawatomi language (Native American language spoken by 7 US bands of Potawatomi). Is there a way to create a new database of these words? I would be happy to create the database if you just tell me how to do it.

Zack, you really have done a wonderful job here. I will be learning alot. Thank you so much!!........ape

I would be happy to look into adding more languages for you. The most difficult part of developing this website by myself and without any budget is finding good language translation resources. If there is anyone who is interested in adding a new language and has their own list of words to start-up a new dictionary, they are welcome to send me their list. All I ask is that you have a minimum of 2-300 words to start with. No guarantees! but I'll do my best. If all else fails I can modify the yahoo widget to practice your own words with.

Zach, I would like to see the Samoan language added to your list of languages. It is a difficult language to learn and I need all the help I can get! I haven't had time to explore your website, but from what I have seen I think it would help not only me, but others who are trying to learn the Samoan language. Is there any chance the Samoan language could be added???

Zach, WOW. I just read your profile on Gringoes.com and caught link to your site. I have been using the flashcards for three days. This is a great tool and it appears that I will use more than my $200 Roseta Stone software package. Very nice job...My wife is Brasilian and we visit Rio four times a year. This will be very helpful in my learning the language. Keep up the good work. Jim Adams Louisville,KY

Yes - and uh no. The flashcard page doesn't seem to be supported by some versions of MAC.. however, there is a link in the page giving another page you can go to if you are having viewing problems. Flashcard SETS also does the same exact thing as the basic flashcards except without the newer technologies. However, any other pages that link to the flashcards will keep taking you back to basic flashcard page which is a problem. I'm going to try and create an option so that if you are having problems, all links within the website will send you to the second flashcard page that works for all browsers. Sorry for the inconvenience. I've spent a lot of time trying to find the problem but I haven't had any luck so far.

Is this software not supporting MAC?

hi zack, I have discovered your website from gringos.com and have just started using it today. Thanks for all your hard work creating this. I live in a small town in rural Canada. Although I love Brazil and visit two times each year I am struggling with PortuguΩs. There are no schools for language here, and no Brasileiro to practice with for a 1000 kilometres I think. But, I have my computer, I have my Pimsleur cd's and my language books so I struggle along. When I go to Brazil, except for the simple phrases, people do not understand me. But, each time I think my comprehension improves a little bit. (um pouco). I will not give up and practice on your website will help. So, obrigado meu amigo. zackery (sorry for the name confusion...you can call me Zack - Can (CanadensΘ)

Madison. That's a good question that involves a couple of things you have to be aware of to play flashcards with sounds. First, you should click "advanced options" this will give you a lot of extra playing options. at the bottom is a long list of check boxes that you can select to refine the playing cards. Two options will be "only words with english sounds" and "only words with *** [foreign language] sounds. Clicking on either one will ensure that that when you click on the next words, only flashcards with sounds will play. Not all words have sounds associated with them.. in fact, as you'll see in the next statement, most words do not have sounds. There is one problem worth mentioning. Because I only have the resources to record my friends in Portuguese you will not be able to hear foreign words in any other language except Portuguese! I'm very sorry about that but I promise to add more language sound files if I ever find extra resources. So, check out the advanced options to refine your game. Sorry it's so complicated. I'm working on making things clearer for everyone!

How do i get sound on the words? I was getting the sound, then lost it and I can't find out how to get it back. It's not in the option section. Love your widget.

I have been having fun with the word match game but am not able to figure out the flash cards. All I get is a wheel which endlessly reports that it is loading but nothing happens. What am I missing? I was happy to find a way to work on vocabulary. I am trying to learn Spanish on my own here. There are no classes in this area and no one to practice with. It is difficult. Guy Warrick Fountain, FL

At the top left corner of all pages, just below the logo, there are 6 small map images representing the languages of the languages spoken in each country. By placing your mouse over each map, you will see a description of the language associated with each map image. Click on the map of the language you wish to practice. Click on the map of Germany to switch the site to practice with the German dictionary. I know the site it a little bit confusing. I have tons of features there that most people are not familiar with. I hope you get some time to play around with the site more and find out about some of the cooler features the site offers like saving words to your own lists to play games with later or rating the level of difficulty of words. You are also welcome to edit or add more words to the dictionary, as this will help to grow the vocabulary of the site.

I will be adding verb conjugations for Spanish French and Italian hopefully. The only problem is that I have to add the conjugations MANUALLY and I don't speak or practice any languages except Portuguese. If any one has a list of verb conjugations they would like to be added, please feel free to send me an email with the four main conjugations listed in the verb conjugation page and I will add them immediately. thanks

Name: Bruno S,
I would like spanish verbs w/ their conjugation :D thank you!

cool widget. However, I can't figure out how to expand it when the words exceed the length given. Also, it would be nice to "rewind". I've had many occasions where I glance up and get through the English word and it switches to the next word - and I wanted to go back and see what the previous one was.

unfortunately, this is a free site that I created as a hobby. I am studying Portuguese so this is the most developed language of the site. It was just easy to adapt it to other languages so I did. however, I don't have any way to make sounds in other languages than Portuguese and the thousands of example sentences, verb conjugations, and pictures are all created for Portuguese. I would love to have assistance from other people who are interested in other languages than Portuguese. Anyone can add examples to existing words at any time. That is why I left everything editable, so corrections can be made, or more information can be added by users like yourself. And, anyone can add new words at any time to the site. That is what I would hope would happen if i can get enough people interested in using the site for their own personal studies. Good luck Gail. I hope this site can be of good use to you.

I'm learning to speak Italian and German, maybe other languages in the persuit of my learning songs in voice class, but I'm having a hard time being able to find a place to hear how words are pronounced. It's great to see the words, but how do you pronounce them? If I could learn from this website, I might even learn another language and in this day and age that would be an important thing. Thank you for this sight and I do hope that it will be a help to me and others. By the way, I'm 53 years old and have gone back to school, so anyone can do it and it is important for people to stay in school and get a good education. No matter how old you are, you can do it.

Update ERROR: sorry all. made some changes yesterday, 3/30/2007, while I was traveling and left a minor error in the code that caused a problem with the new personalized saved list. It is fixed now, but if you have any problems let me know. Sorry if it caused anyone problems.

Name: zack
It's a great idea, and I've actually created it already in a test environment but I haven't had time to add it to the site this week (I'm on vacation). It will allow you to create and name new "saved word lists". as many as you want in fact. So you can have a Save list of Different languages or even for different topics, or levels of difficulty. Expect to see this on the site within another week (today is 3/30/2007).

Zack, I looled at your template list for Evernote. What would you charge for a custom medical report writing template template, with various categories. Thanks Bill

Nick, almost all verbs on that list are irregular. In the future, i would like to add ALL VERBS and use some type of formula to conjugate a verb that is regular. Just need more time to set it up!

What an extremely ueseful and practical resource...... infact I have been making a filemaker database myself.... to actively learn portuguese. Im in Sao Paulo and saw your posts on Gringoes. I especially liked the active nature of the verb conugation section (particularly hard for a Brit!) although one suggestion would be to highlight the regular from the irregular..... Thanks for sharing your knowledge Nick

Hi Zack Just discovered your Portuguese Practice site and have been very much impressed. It was obviously a lot of hard work and Im very grateful that you chose to share it with the rest of us. I was both very happy to see a mechanism for changing the database and also worried by how easy it was to do that; it is obviously open to abuse. Maybe changes submitted could be placed into a separate category until someone I guess I mean you can review them and update the originals. I made one alteration and found at least one other change Id make isnt o copo a drinking glass and not a cup which should be a xφcara before I felt the weight of responsibility of perhaps screwing things up for other people and you by getting something wrong no matter how sure Im right. BTW I noticed that the entry editing page the one in English not the one in Portuguese has the English example and Portuguese translation boxes misnamed. Anyway thanks a million for producing such an excellent resource for people like me who are struggling to learn Portuguese. Best wishes David

Zack this is a fabulous site. Thanks for putting it together! I already speak some Portuguese and have spent 4 mos. in Brazil. I found out about this site on www.gringoes.com today. Once I started using it I found many words I still didnt know. I plan on visiting daily from now on. There are no Brazilians in my city to practice with so this interactive study should be a big help. Thanks again Sharon in Missouri
